Dispersion of light
DISPERSION OF LIGHT
It was shown by Newton in 1666,that when a beam of white light from sun or arc light is made to fall upon the refracting face of a prism, the emergent beam from the other refracting face of a prism is found to split up into a series of coloured bands is called spectrum.
The order of colours from the base of prism is as follows -
- Violet,
- Indigo,
- Blue,
- Green,
- Yellow,
- Orange,
- Red.
It is written as VIBGYOR.
NEWTON was in doubt that the prism may colour the Ray's, but after several experiments he concluded that the white ray is combination of seven colours and prism disperse them ,
Thus, the phenomenon of splitting of white light into its constituent colours on passing through a prism is called dispersion of light and the bands of colours so obtained on the screen is called spectrum of white light.
Cause of Dispersion:-
White light consists of light Rays in a continuous range of wavelength.Refractive index of prism material is different for different wavelengths and is given by catchy relation,
